Samba dance was originated in Brazil in the 19th century; samba owes its rhythm to the African slave dances on the Brazilian sugarcane plantations.

The dance is characterized by rapid rhythmic steps and a swaying, rocking motion from the dancers made to lively beats. The dance is mostly done in 2/4 time, but it can also be done in three steps to make a 3/4 rhythm.

Samba dance is rich in African beats and customs and has incorporated other culture throughout its development, mostly from Latin America.

Samba dance evolved particularly in Rio de Janeiro, from where it spread through out Brazil to the rest of Latin America and eventually to other parts of the world

This powerful sounding form would in time become the heartbeat of Rio’s Carnival, and the primary vehicles for the style were (and are) organized groups or contingents called samba schools.

Dating back to the late 1920s, Rio’s schools emerged as fraternal groups devoted toplaying and dancing for carnaval, and now represent some of the most important cultural institutions in the country. Brimming with hundreds of percussionists(collectively called the bateria), dancers, costume and float designers and choreographers, the schools prepare virtually year-round for the annual carnival parade, and each group enters into competition with its theme samba called the enredo.

By the 1970s, samba saw its rise within the era of MPB(popular musicBrasileira)because somebody artists such modernized the more dynamic batucada style with contemporary harmony and instrumentation, fusing samba with rock, jazz and other forms, and bringing the style into the mainstream. Samba was everywhere, and it seemed to be the measure of happiness for Brazilians of all races and social classes.

Now it’s a solo dance, a couple’s dance, a street-dancing exhibition, and a hybrid, merged with rock, acrobatics, and even reggae. There has never been one definitive samba; the dance is as fluid as the pelvic isolations that keep it hot. Solo samba and partner samba styles work off the same rhythms with fast or slow percussive beats.

Samba dancers are infectiously happy, can be very show and athletic, with lots of dips, spins and lifts, depending on the abilities of the dancers. Latin dances bring fast rhythms, fancy costumes, and fun steps to traditional ballroom dancers. There’s no doubt the samba is high energy and exhilarating, not only to dance but also to watch.
